MALTA

Info

Provided by Malta Tourism Authority

Like a stone vessel in the centre of the Mediterranean, the Maltese archipelago blends its natural assets with 7000 years of history. From time immemorial, its incredible beauty, honey-coloured stone and natural harbours have been responsible for its widespread reputation and influence. Situated at the gates of Africa and the East, 100 km to the south of Sicily, Malta is a tranquil celebration of sea and sun. Like the lace-makers in its old villages, the translucent crystal waters shape its dazzling coastline: rocky creeks, small coves of red sand, natural pools, underwater caves and the "Azure Window" ... A wonderful climate, a breath of fresh air, an invitation to have a go at some of the many water sports so popular on the islands.

As a stepping stone in the long history of man on earth, the Maltese Islands went through a golden Neolithic period, the remains of which are the mysterious megalithic temples. Later on, the Phoenicians, the Greeks, the Carthaginians and the Romans all left their traces on the Islands before yielding them to the Arabs and then the Normans. But it was the Knights of St. John who, in restoring the links with Christianity, a faith first brought to the Islands by St. Paul, took Malta through a new golden age by making it a key player in the cultural arena of 17th and 18th century Europe.

Malta must have been an impressive island. It is still today, so many centuries later, a very special place thanks to the warmth of its people, who radiate the typical Mediterranean spontaneity and joie de vivre. As you step into its history, you step into the timeless magic of a truly unique destination. Combine this with Malta's scenic beauty, rich historic legacy and excellent climate and you have an ideal destination. It is now your turn to be seduced by its breathtaking seascapes, its bays and the myriad leisure activities it offers for a truly relaxing stay.
