Rome is the Eternal City and for very good reasons. Epicentre of the Ancient Roman Empire, Holy Seat and spiritual nerve-centre of the Catholic Church, and now capital of Italy, it offers millennia of power and splendour amid articulated remains of its glorious distant-past, the Renaissance majesty of its Vatican, and the tasteful, ultra-designed vitality of its powerhouse modern nation, all within walking distance of each other.

There is so much to see and do in Rome that it would be daunting if the city were not so very likeable, and getting around it such a pleasure. In any case, experiencing all of it is not essential for loving it. There is a world-famous site or landmark around every corner, every one of which would justify an entire visit. The Roman Forum and the Coliseum; the Trevi Fountain; the dolce-vita of the Via Veneto; the artfully landscaped grounds of the Villa Borghese; the sumptuous shopping of streets like dei Condotti, del Corso, and Marconi; the down to earth deliciousness of Trastevere's restaurants... to mention but the most obvious. Rome is also full of hidden corners, and some of the most delightful small hotels and b&b's in the world.

The great advantage of Rome for travellers to Italy is its location. Central and totally connected by excellent highways, Rome is a perfect hub for visiting both the north and the south of the Boot, affording satisfying and exciting rest-stops between trips in its generous fold. Being in Rome is essential for understanding the drive and dynamism of Italy, as it has been for an eternity.
